On the night of 11 August 2020, violent clashes took place in the Indian city of Bangalore, Karnataka.[4] Provoked by an inflammatory Facebook post on Muhammad that was allegedly shared by the nephew of the Akhanda Srinivas Murthy, a state legislator of the Indian National Congress,[5] a Muslim mob[6] arrived at his house in protest which turned violent.[7]

The clashes between the police and the mobs started around the residence of the legislator and spread to the police stations of KG Halli and DJ Halli.[8] The incident resulted in the imposition of a curfew in the affected areas.[9] 3 people were killed after police opened fire on the crowds.[10][11] 30–80 policemen[6] and several journalists, were injured by armed assailants.[12] Murthy's property was torched during the period of violence.[13]

The following day, over 100 people were arrested by the police.[14] Some of the crowds were also allegedly led by members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an Islamist fundamentalist political outfit[12] and has led to the arrest of a few of its leaders.[15]

In the second version, a girl from the Hindu Jat community was allegedly harassed in an eve-teasing incident by one Muslim youth in Kawal village.[15][16] In retaliation, Hindu relatives of the girl in question, Sachin Singh and Gaurav Singh,[17][18] killed the youth named Shahnawaz Qureshi.[19] The two brothers were lynched by a Muslim mob when they tried to escape.[18] The police arrested eleven members of the girl's family for killing the Muslim youth.[16] According to some locals, the police did not act against the killers of the Hindu brothers.[16]

Supreme Court of India while hearing petitions in relation to the riots held the Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party, prima facie guilty of negligence in preventing the violence and ordered it to immediately arrest all those accused irrespective of their political affiliation. Court also blamed the Central government for its failure to provide intelligence inputs to the Samajwadi Party-governed state government in time to help sound alerts.

In 1989, as part of the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign, which aimed to construct a Hindu temple at Ayodhya in place of the Babri mosque, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had organized a "Ramshila" procession in Bhagalpur. The procession aimed to collect bricks (shilas) for the proposed Ram temple at Ayodhya. One such procession passing through Fatehpur village provoked brickbatting and arson on 22 October. Prior to the outbreak of the riots, two false rumors about the killing of Hindu students started circulating: one rumor stated that nearly 200 Hindu university students had been killed by the Muslims, while another rumor stated that 31 Hindu boys had been murdered with their bodies dumped in a well at the Sanskrit College.[5] Apart from these, the political and criminal rivalries in the area also played a role in inciting the riots.
